A Rinzai Zen temple said to have been founded in 1457, during the reign of King Sho Taikyu. Known for over 550 years as “Shuri's own temple,” its main hall was rebuilt in 2009. It sits along the path from Tamaudun toward Ryutan-dori, and is one of the twelve zodiac temples on Shuri's “Teramai” pilgrimage, enshrining the guardian buddhas of those born in the Year of the Dragon, Snake, Sheep, or Monkey. As a temple that has remained active since the kingdom era, it is a rare presence even within Shuri.
