Sairaiin Temple (Daruma-dera) Historic site
Shuri Station area
A Rinzai Zen temple of the Myoshinji branch, affectionately known as “Daruma-dera” (Daruma Temple). Its mountain name is Darumaho, and a statue of Daruma (Bodhidharma) on the grounds marks the site. Originally located in Gibo, it moved to its present site in the Meiji era and was rebuilt after being destroyed in the Battle of Okinawa. A popular spot for New Year visits, it is one of the twelve zodiac temples on Shuri's “Teramai” pilgrimage, enshrining the guardian buddhas of those born in the Year of the Rabbit, Dog, or Boar. Its location, about 5 minutes on foot from Shuri Station, makes it an easy stop.
