The royal capital of the Ryukyu Kingdom's politics, diplomacy and culture for centuries. The vermilion Seiden (Main Hall) was lost in the 2019 fire; after a full restoration it opens to the public on November 23, 2026. Beyond the paid area — the Seiden and Yohokoriden — the free area (Kankaimon Gate, Kyo-no-uchi and more) is extensive, making this the natural starting point for exploring Shuri.
