Greater Shuri area

A lush, green park spreading north of Shuri, with Sueyoshi Shrine — one of the eight major Ryukyuan shrines — standing atop a rocky outcrop within its grounds. Said to have been founded in the 15th century, the shrine building is dramatically supported by a stone arch built into the cliff face, appearing almost to grow out of the forest. The natural setting feels far removed from the city, making it a good spot for a walk or forest bathing, though the approach involves stone steps and a hillside path.

Note: The approach involves stone steps and a slippery hillside path. Wear comfortable shoes, and take extra care in and after rain.
