Tamaudun Historic site
Ryutan Pond area
Built in 1501, the largest royal mausoleum of the Ryukyu Kingdom and resting place of the Second Sho Dynasty kings. Part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing, and also designated a National Treasure as a stone structure. The three burial chambers — restored after heavy damage in the Battle of Okinawa — and the quiet stone courtyard leave a strong impression. Visiting the exhibition room first, to learn the layout, is recommended before viewing the chambers.
